Farewell, Good Night
A downloadable game
Farewell, Good Night is a one- or two-player game about electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and memory loss. ECT is a controversial treatment for psychiatric ailments such as major depressive disorder. While it is found to be superior to placebo or antidepressants in general, it has a price: memory loss. The memory loss is often temporary, but can also be permanent.
This is a game about uncovering and bargaining for memories. The ward has carefully inspected the packages your brother sent you, and allowed you to receive mementos that hold meaningful memories for you. You will discover these memories and build a history of yourself. You will know the price of these memories.
This game ends with you leaving the ward into the open arms of your loved ones. But along the way, you will have to answer the question: if you could keep your memories, what are you willing to sacrifice for it?
A message from momatoesThis game draws upon my personal experience with ECT. I do not regret undergoing it, but it came with costs I still grapple with today. This game is an exploration of this theme. In a way, I made this game for myself, but I still dearly hope that you create your own meaningful experiences with this game. Thank you for taking this story into your life. ───── Small ways to support:
